The Lent experiment, part 33

Today: Psalm 33.

‘May your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in you.’ (Ps. 33:22)

What do most people put their hope in? Their job? Spouse? Pension? Friends? Helpful people / things, but all of these can fall away at one point. We can all of a sudden lose our jobs, go through a divorce, see our pension vaporate into almost nothing and our friends could walk out on us. That’s why it’s tricky to put our full hope in things we might lose.

There’s only one thing in life which we cannot lose: God’s unfailing love for us. That’s why 3 times in this psalm David connects having hope to God’s love:

1. ‘But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love,’ (v. 18)

2. ‘We wait in hope for the Lordhe is our help and our shield.’ (v. 20)

3. ‘May your unfailing love be with us, Lordeven as we put our hope in you.’ (v. 33)

We can have hope in life because the Almighty Creator of Heaven and Earth loves us and always will. In Christ nothing can ever seperate us from his love (Rom. 8:38) And that’s why we may trust that whatever happens to us, God will use it for our good (Rom. 8:28). In this life he will take care of us and in the life to come we will spend eternity with him!

Knowing this, why would we ever loose hope?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, whatever we’re going through at the moment, help us not to despair, but put our hope in your love for us. Because your love never fails. You love us so much that you were willing to die for us. But you rose back to life and we may now live in you, filled with hope for this life and for all eternity. Three things will last forever: faith, hope, and love; and the greatest of these is your love (1 Cor. 13:13). Yes!
